The Public’s desire to participate in recycling efforts is growing.

Waste Transfer Stations (WTS) are providing more opportunities for the public to sort their own waste loads when visiting.

This creates opportunities and issues for WTS operators.

Most sites provide an Ad Hoc arrangement of different bins for the public to sort their recyclables into with varying degrees of success.

The LBin Recycling Drop-Off System provides a clean new integrated systemic approach to safely extract benefits from the public effort to segregate recyclables.

What do we have now?

Most existing systems have the same basic concepts of operation.

Drop-off facilities primarily consist of a range of different bins for different materials.

The bins are typically smaller capacity transfer bins that are picked up frequently by a range of different recycling contractors.
Trucks often have access to pick-up bins through the public areas during opening hours.
Bins are often overfilled, waiting to be serviced, particularly on weekends.

Most sites, while well-intentioned, become messy and chaotic, requiring more oversite than sites can provide.

More effort is often exerted to maintain cleanliness and safety than resource recovery.

Safety & Environment: Truck Frequency
To enable the Public to deposit waste directly into transfer bins, bin volumes are reduced, requiring significantly more servicing.

This means more truck movements and loading around people.

More trucks, Emissions and drivers on the road.
Safety: Elevated Public Platforms
Providing elevated platforms (Sawtooths and Pit Civils) to allow for the Public to deposit into Larger transfer bins. has created a fall risk that has led to serious injuries and fatalities.
Cost: Transport & Material Handling
Increased transport and the creation of new deposition areas increase the amount of waste handling and waste in motion.

Waste in motion creates costs and emissions that negate the value of the recovery process.

Site Cleanliness
With bins overflowing & servicing controlled by the availably of the transfer contractor, the operator has to deal with the mess or try and predict the servicing in advance. Advance serving means that many transfer bins leave only partially full.
Bulky Items & White Goods
White goods and other bulky items like furniture are often placed on the ground due to the issues with lifting them into bins. These laydown areas require significant staff manual intervention to clear, creating staffing demands and increased staff risk.
Contamination
The Public knowledge of what is to go into each Recycling bin is limited. The incorrect material is often placed in a bin, contaminating the stream and reducing recovery values or decontamination costs.

Contamination with hazardous materials like chemicals & asbestos can pose a severe health threat that is difficult and costly to remediate, particularly when mixed with the other contents of a bin.
